How to write a meta description that gets clicked

  • It's an ad for the page, not a summary

Google doesn't rank pages on meta descriptions, but people choose which result to click based on them. Write the reason to click.

  • Aim for roughly 120–155 characters

Longer descriptions get cut off, especially on mobile. Put the most important words first in case they are.

  • Include the keyword naturally

Google bolds matching terms in the snippet, which catches the eye. Don't stuff it in, though. One natural mention is enough.

  • Be specific

Numbers, features and outcomes beat “learn more about our amazing products”. Specific snippets stand out among ten generic ones.

  • Match the page

If the description promises templates, the page needs templates. A mismatch means quick bounces.

  • Make each one unique

Duplicate meta descriptions across pages make Google more likely to ignore them and write its own.

The snippet

This is the exact prompt the tool above runs. Save it as a snippet in Snippetbar and it works on any text you select.

You are an SEO copywriter. Write meta descriptions for the page content below.

Rules:
- 3 variants, each 120–155 characters. Show the character count after each.
- Include the target keyword once, naturally, near the start: {keyword — or infer the main topic if not given}.
- Lead with the benefit or outcome; include one specific detail (number, feature, format).
- Only use facts from the content. No "best", "#1", or invented claims.
- Active voice. No "In this article", "Welcome to", or "Learn more about".
- A soft CTA (Start free, See the templates) only if it fits the page.

Return only the 3 variants with counts.

Use it where you work

  • In your CMS

In Webflow, WordPress or Framer, copy the article intro, run the snippet and paste into the SEO description field without leaving the editor.

  • During SEO audits

Work through a list of pages with missing or duplicate descriptions: copy the content, run the snippet, paste the result, and move on.

  • For new landing pages

Generate the meta description from the hero copy as the last step before you publish.
