How to write a job description that attracts the right people

  • Start with why the role exists

“We're hiring our first support lead because we've grown past founders answering tickets” tells candidates more than any list of duties.

  • Describe outcomes, not chores

“Build the help center customers use before contacting us” is more attractive than “write documentation”, and more accurate too.

  • Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves

Long requirement lists put off strong candidates who don't tick every box. Keep must-haves to what someone truly can't do the job without.

  • Include the pay range

It's legally required in many places, and even where it isn't, it's the most-read line in any posting. Leaving it out costs you applicants.

  • Cut the clichés and coded language

“Rockstar”, “ninja”, “work hard play hard” and “digital native” put off good candidates, and some of them can read as exclusionary. Describe the actual work and culture instead.

  • Explain the process

Saying how many stages there are and how long it takes shows respect for candidates' time and improves your completion rate.

  • In your ATS

Rewrite an old job post in Greenhouse, Ashby or Workable in place to update the tone and cut the clichés.
